<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In England the first bus service which was launched in 1662
was more like horse carriages and was invented by French mathematician Blaise Pascal. D<span style="background: white; color: #444444; line-height: 115%;">ecades after this invention took place, </span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #545454;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">prototypical British gentleman scientist and inventor</span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"> </span><span style="background: white; color: #444444; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; line-height: 115%;">Sir Goldsworthy Gurney designed the
steam-powered bus in 1830. Blaise </span><span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; line-height: 115%;">Pascal
named his public bus service in Paris ‘carriages’ but those
buses ceased to operate after 15 years and they did not appear
again until horse-powered multi-person carriages emerged in Paris again in
about 1819 or 1820. "Omnibus" is a Latin word meaning "for
all." </span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; line-height: 115%;">They were more like modern-day buses custom made for passengers’ comfort, to transport multiple people along a route and
allow them to board or debark at locations along the route without the
necessity of having stations.</span></div>

The first regular bus route appears to have started from Manchester to
Liverpool, beginning in 1824. Ten years later steam-powered buses came into
service in England. The Siemens brothers in 1882 invented the electric
trolleycar which did not go into service carrying passengers until 1901 in
Germany, and 1911 in England. </span></span><span class="tgc"><span style="background: white; color: #222222; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In 1827, George Shillibeer introduced the first school
bus for Quaker school at Abney Park in Stoke
Newington in the North-East of the United Kingdom. It was horse-drawn and
designed to carry twenty-five children. <span style="font-size: 18pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Buses have been used on the streets of London since 1829,
when George Shillibeer started operating his horse drawn <i>omnibus</i> service
from Paddington to
the city. In 1850 Thomas Tilling started horse bus services, and in 1855 the London General Omnibus Company (LGOC) was founded to amalgamate and
regulate the horse-drawn omnibus services then operating in London. </span><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">LGOC began using motor omnibuses in 1902, and manufactured them
itself from 1909. In 1904 Thomas Tilling started its first motor bus service.
The last LGOC horse-drawn bus ran on 25 October 1911, although independent
operators used them until 1914.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span class="tgc"><span style="background: white; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="line-height: 115%;">In 1909 Thomas Tilling and
LGOC entered into an agreement to pool their resources. The agreement restricted
the expansion of Thomas Tilling in London, and allowed the LGOC to lead an
amalgamation of most of London's bus services. However, also in 1909 Thomas
Clarkson started the National Steam Car Company to run steam buses </span><span style="line-height: 115%;">in London in competition with the LGOC. In 1919 the National
company reached agreement with the LGOC to withdraw from bus operation in
London, and steam bus services ceased later that year</span></span></span></span></div>

was designed to allow more passengers and to replace the horse-drawn double-decker omnibus.</span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="color: #222222;">In 1912 the <i>Underground Group</i>, which at that time
owned most of the London Underground, </span><span style="color: #222222;"> bought the LGOC. In 1933 the LGOC, along with the rest of the
Underground Group, became part of the new London Passenger Transport Board</span><span style="color: #222222;">. The name London General was replaced
by <b>London Transport</b>, which became synonymous with the red London
bus.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 6.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="color: #222222;">Bus numbers were first used in 1906. When the independent firms
started in 1922, they used General route numbers, along with suffixes from the
alphabet to denote branch routes. In 1924, under the London Traffic Act</span><span style="color: #222222;">, the Metropolitan Police was given the authority of allocating
route numbers, which all buses had to carry. This ultimately led to chaos and
in the London Passenger Transport Act of 1933 </span><span style="color: #222222;">the powers of allocating route numbers
was taken away from the police and handed once again to professional busmen.</span><span style="color: #222222;"> Suffixes were gradually abolished over
the decades, the last such route in London being the 77A, which became the 87
in June 2006.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 6.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="color: #222222;">The LPTB, under Lord Ashfield donned</span><span style="color: #222222;"> responsibility for all bus services
in the London Passenger Transport Area, an area with a radius of about 30 miles
of central London. This included the London General country buses (later to be
London Transport's green buses), Green Line Coaches </span><span style="color: #222222;">and the services of several Tilling Group </span><span style="color: #222222;">and independent companies</span><span style="color: #222222;">.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 6.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="color: #222222;">London buses continued to operate under the London Transport
name from 1933 to 2000, although the political management of transport services
changed several times. The LPTB oversaw transport from 1933 to 1947 until it
was re-organised into the London Transport Executive </span><span style="color: #0b0080;">(</span><span style="color: #222222;">1948 to 1962). Responsibility for London Transport was
subsequently taken over to the London Transport Board </span><span style="color: #222222;">(1963 to 1969), the Greater London Council </span><span style="color: #222222;">(1970 to 1984) and London Regional Transport </span><span style="color: #222222;">(1984 to 2000).<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 6.0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="color: #222222;">However, in 1969 legislation was passed to transfer the green
country services, outside the area of the Greater London Council, to the
recently formed National Bus Company</span><span style="color: #222222;">. Trading under the name <b>London Country</b> the
green buses and Green Line Coaches became the responsibility of a new NBC
subsidiary, London Country Bus Services </span><span style="color: #222222;">on 1 January 1970.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 6.0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 6.0pt;">

in central London was the Red Arrows</span><span style="color: #222222;">. The routes, all numbered in the 500s, ran
from main line stations to various locations in the West End and City. They
were introduced in 1966 and expanded in 1968, but in the 1990s they were
gradually phased out and only two former routes, 507 and 508</span><span style="color: #222222;">, continued.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Dhananjay Chatterjee was a guard in a
building where a teen-aged girl named Hetal Parekh was found dead in March 1990.
He was convicted of having raped and killed her and was hanged on his 39th
birthday, August 14, 2004, protesting his innocence until the end. His
execution followed a shrill campaign waged by the wife of the then West Bengal
chief minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. Chatterjee’s appeals were rejected by
the then president APJ Abdul Kalam on the advice of arguably India’s worst home
minister, Shivraj Patil, going by historian Ramachandra Guha’s <a href="https://twitter.com/ram_guha/status/394836836486377472">estimation</a>. In
a similar situation, his predecessor in Rashtrapati Bhavan, KR Narayanan, had
applied his mind wonderfully, as emerges from an anecdote narrated by his
secretary, Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Delivering the People’s Union of Civil
Liberties’ 35th JP Memorial <a href="http://puclkarnataka.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/JP-Lecture-transcription.pdf">Lecture</a>
in Bangalore on March 23 in 2015 earlier this year, Gandhi described how he had
received a call late at night from Chennai regarding the case of a man on death
row in Tamil Nadu and how the president had unhesitatingly decided on commuting
his sentence. Gandhi went on to speak of the independent and cerebral outlook
that India’s sole Dalit president brought to his job. As for Dhananjay
Chatterjee’s execution, the People’s Union for Democratic Rights, a
four-decades-old New Delhi-based volunteer outfit, put out a <a href="http://www.pudr.org/?q=content/murderers-dhananjoy-hazir-ho-abolish-death-penalty">statement</a> on July 21, 2015 based on an analysis by two scholars from the Indian
Statistical Institute in Kolkata, arguing that the guard was framed.<br />
The analysis by Debashish Sengupta and Prabal Chaudhury, timed to coincide with
the Law Commission’s <a href="http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-others/law-commission-consultation-from-varun-to-tharoor-voices-emerge-against-death-penalty/">Public
Hearing on the death penalty</a> in New Delhi on Saturday, July 11, described
what they believe was a botched investigation. They also highlighted
inconsistencies in the evidence and pointed to fictitious claims, all aimed,
they say, to frame Chatterjee. The two scholars noted that a police witness in
court denied having seen Chatterjee at the victim’s flat. The police seizure
list was signed by someone who supplied tea to the police and did not turn up
in court. The antecedents of some items presented as incriminating evidence,
such as a necklace and a watch, were never checked. The trial court failed to question
why no murder weapon was recovered and why there was no blood on Chatterjee’s
clothes even though there were 21 stab wounds on the victim’s body. While the
crime was said to have been committed in a short window between 5:20 pm and
5:50 pm, when Hetal Parekh’s mother was out of the flat, there was a three-hour
delay before the police were called – ample time for tampering with the
evidence. The Parekh family members’ statements were inconsistent, and the
family soon wrapped up its thriving jewellery business and left Kolkata,
raising the possibility of an honour killing, the scholars contend. A letter
written by the victim’s father alleging that Chatterjee used to harass his
daughter, which was used by the police to establish a motive, seems to have been
written after the crime, the scholars say. Chatterjee had spent 14 years in
jail before he was hanged. He was thus punished twice for a crime he likely did
not commit, going by the Kolkata scholars’ analysis, for the mere fault of
being too poor to engage a competent lawyer.</span></div>

make interesting reading. For one, it is an attempt to get under the skin of
crime by a criminal waiting to be hanged. And, two, it insists that he did not
rape Hetal Parekh after she came back home from a history examination. Murder,
yes, but rape, no way. This January, when the government had pulled itself up
to settle the case once and for all, that a jail official asked him to maintain
a diary. A pencil and some note-pads were given to him but Chatterjee waited
for June to really immerse himself in the diarist's job. <br />
The product might just surprise everyone, feels prisons officials who are
keeping a close tab on Chatterjee. The diary had the usual autobiographical
inputs but, somewhere down the line, changed its tone. Somebody told Dhananjoy
that he must analyse the reasons behind the gory murders taking place daily.
"Why should you limit yourself to your life?" the officials
supposedly suggested. </span></div>

Officials still do not know Chatterjee's analysis of crime and criminals but

into some of the pages, they believe that Chatterjee is only admitting to the
murder. Chatterjee has also turned "religious" with a vengeance, say
officials. Always "apparently god-fearing", he is now an avid reader
of the Gita, a copy of which was given to him as the country was debating
whether he should be hanged for what he did 14 years ago.</span></div>

Dhananjay's wife and brother two and a half months ago. The mercy petition was
sent by the home ministry for the President's consideration about a month back.

rejecting the mercy petition, the noose will tighten around the neck of
Dhananjoy Chatterjee, who has been awaiting the execution of the death penalty
for the rape and murder of 14-year-old Hetal Parekh on March 15, 1990. This was
the second mercy petition of the convict to the President. He has been lodged
in the Alipore Central jail in Kolkata for 14 years. The first petition was
rejected in 1994. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The convict's family members are not
willing to give up. Even as the West Bengal government set in motion the
formalities to execute the rapist-killer after receiving a formal communication
from the Union Home Ministry, his brother is said to have sought a copy of the
letter issued by the President rejecting clemency in order to take the next
legal course under Article 32 of the Constitution. (Article 32 confers the
right to move the Supreme Court for enforcement of fundamental rights.)
Dhananjoy Chatterjee, who worked as a lift operator in the building where Hetal
Parekh and her family lived, raped and killed the girl when she returned to an
empty flat from school. The Alipore Sessions Court awarded Dhananjoy Chatterjee
life imprisonment for rape and a death sentence for murder. The sentence was
upheld both by the High Court and the Supreme Court, and the Governor of West
Bengal rejected the plea for mercy filed by the convict's relatives. In
February 1994, Dhananjoy obtained an interim stay from the High Court. More
than nine years later, in September 2003, his petition for commutation of his
sentence owing to the delay in its execution was quashed by the High Court, and
Dhananjoy Chatterjee appealed to the Supreme Court. In February the Supreme
Court referred his mercy petition to the Governor for reconsideration. The
Governor once again rejected the petition and Dhananjoy was scheduled to be
hanged to death at 4-30 a.m. on June 25. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">But Dhananjoy's life was once again
prolonged when a communique from the Union Home Ministry asked the State
government to postpone the hanging until President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam gave his
opinion on a mercy petition filed by Dhananjoy Chatterjee's family and several
social organisations. When the President's office sought the State government's
views on the matter, the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front
government made it clear that it fully supported the death sentence. Chief
Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said: "The government and I are in favour
of the death sentence in this particular case. The Centre has been informed of
this. The message should go loud and clear to the perpetrators of such
crime." </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">

rejection of his clemency petition, Dhananjoy Chatterjee petitioned the Supreme
Court, which refused to entertain the petition as the matter was being examined
by the President under Article 72 of the Constitution. Dhananjoy's case further
weakened when on July 2 the Home Ministry recommended his execution to the
President. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">With the hangman's noose now looming
large over Dhananjoy, the debate that is raging is not whether he deserves to
be hanged but whether capital punishment is necessary in today's' society. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Those who knew Hetal feel that
Dhananjoy deserves nothing less than the death penalty. Gillian Rosemary
D'Costa Hart, principal of Welland Gouldsmith School, where Hetal studied,
said, "Hetal was one of our brightest students. A lovely girl who met a
very ghastly end. If Dhananjoy is hanged the pain won't disappear, but there
would be some kind of justice." On the other hand, Dhananjoy's relatives
and friends from his village in Bankura district have continuously appealed to
the Governor and the courts for clemency. His family members, including his
wife and his aged, ailing parents, sat in dharna in front of the Press Club in
Kolkata, and threatened to commit suicide if Dhananjoy was hanged. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Kolkata is deeply divided over the
issue. While numerous human rights organisations and non-governmental
organisations have been protesting against the death sentence and have been
petitioning the Governor and the President for commutation of the sentence,
there is an equal number of outraged citizens who feel that the rapist-killer
deserves to be hanged. </span></div>

The death penalty is a cruel and brutal practice. I am not saying this in
defence of Dhananjoy Chatterjee. I have nothing but contempt for that man. But
I am against any kind of brutality. Let him be punished for the rest of his
life for what he has done. I feel extremely sad for parents, relatives and
friends of the girl he killed. But brutality is not an answer to
brutality." </span>

Devi said: "You cannot bring down the crime rate by awarding capital
punishment." She feels that Dhananjoy should be given an opportunity to
reform himself. But Meera Bhattacharjee, the Chief Minister's wife, feels that
no mercy should be shown to Dhananjoy. Speaking at a debate on the issue, she
made an emotional plea: "I have come here as a woman and the mother of a
daughter. I know what the parents of Hetal Parekh have been going through for
the past 14 years." Teary-eyed, she recounted with graphic details how the
girl was mercilessly battered and raped and finally strangled with the rope of
a swing that broke her voice box. "Can you still have thoughts of
forgiving him?" she asked the gathering. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Although CPI(M) State secretary Anil

time we should not lose sight of the enormity and the gravity of Dhananjoy's
crime." </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Life imprisonment is all Dhananjoy
wanted. He reportedly told the sentry guarding him the night before he was

just a line of punishment." </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Consultant neuropsychiatrist Dr.
Shiladitya Ray of Belle Vue clinic and Ruby General Hospital said: "I
would expect any normal person to be a wreck by now. But his appearance and
body language show that he is unrepentant and just doesn't care. For normal
people such a situation brings about severe depression, absolute insomnia and
food refusal, and psychomotor retardation. He has hardly shown any of these
symptoms." According to him, for a "characterologic reformation"
a stable baseline is a precondition. "History and precedence has shown
that such people cannot be reformed," he said. </span></div>

was perfectly in good spirits and there was no resistance from his side when he

the day till late evening, Dhananjoy listened to Anup Jalota’s bhajans and
Manna Dey’s songs on a tape-recorder which the jail authorities had arranged
for him as he wished. But most of the time, he maintained a deep silence. He
wanted to write something to his parents and wife on the postcards supplied to

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">China had publicly declared to ban surrogacy but now it has decided to drop the idea since the initial plan can have a negative impact on the society. The idea of banning surrogacy will encourage a black market business of surrogate pregnancies patronised by wealthy Chinese.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">On the other hand, according to experts, banning surrogacy can lead to exploitation of poor women in China, and can be detrimental to their rights. </span></span><br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">More than a decade ago as far as my memory goes back I remember two soap operas had become hugely popular among the Indian television viewers who used to lap up those programmes like stress-busters.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Those two shows which were aired by Star Plus TV channel under the banner of Balaji Telefilms were "Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki" and "Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi". The audience, especially the women, were inspired by Tulsi of Kyuki...and Parvati of Kahani....The character roles etched by the director and portrayed by the stars became household names at that time. The show used to start with a theme song which doubled the popularity of the show. Women of all ages, whether they were housewives, school-going kids, girls studying in colleges -- the day-to-day episodes were discussed by the viewers at all gatherings where these women happened to unite. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">Unfortunately, not all were lucky enough to follow these shows regularly at night and they were treated among friends like social out-castes are treated in our society.So one had to catch a glimpse of 'Kyuki Saas' and 'Kahani' to remain a friend of friends. Gradually the liking for these two shows soared to a height giving Indian television programmes a new horizon.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">The soap operas had started in 2000 when I was in college and came to an end when I had started working. The interesting part is that I had an opportunity to watch those episodes at home in Kolkata but my TV and I had parted since I had left home to study post-graduation in Bangalore. The hostel where we were living had a common room for girls where there was a TV for all. Not every day we had a chance to watch those programmes so we lost in touch. Again when I got a job, there were days when the Virani family of 'Kyuki Saas'and the Agarwal family of 'Kahani' used to remind me of my family and how good it was to hold the dinner plate and watch the great Tulsi talking to Ba.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">God had been gracious to me and after I came back home I found my friendly TV in the living room. Now there are many channels coming through cable and each has a colourful name. But Star still rocks like before. Young and fresh new faces are making their career through Indian television shows and their talents are being awarded at big banner award functions. Since 2010, many shows have come on air but ended without an ending leaving us wondering what happened to "Is pyaar Ko Kya Naam Du" which has a new story and new casts. What happened to Navya and Anant? These days I keep my fingers crossed when I watch Nisha aur uski cousins. It will be an injustice not to appreciate those youngsters gifted with good acting talents who give us happiness in our otherwise busy life in reality.</span></span><br />

The sights and sounds of our amiable sparrows</h3>

<br />
Our neighbourhood is now a bee-hive of babies who are not lesser than six months and children who are not more than 10 years old. The moment morning breaks and the sun rises in the east at around 5.45 am some sparrows come to our verandah like small children. When the babies -- who live nearby and whose voice, laughter and cries have become so much familiar --are fast asleep, these sparrows add life to our daily routine work. They wake my parents to a new day.<br />

Sparrows have a habit of coming in a flock<br />
<br />
of five to seven and the number of male bird visitors are greater than females. The male birds, who wear darker shades of brown on their wings and neck, make a louder sound which if carefully heard seems like "speak speak" and "quick" and then they whistle. They nose-dive from the grill to a level of our first floor and again starts flying from than point without touching the ground and comes back in full energy to swing on a hanging cable. Like I watch them sitting on an iron bar, these birds too look at me with their sharp eyes. The females are less smarter and have a faded look with a thinner shade of light brown beak. By the time my day starts they become restless for their daily dose of puffed rice spread especially for them on a flower pot in the verandah. No sooner that two or three have finished having food, the rest comes flying to the venue to check if they are missing out on something. Earlier I was the one who gave them food and in fact I had regularised the system of offering them breakfast as a part of our daily life but with passing time the duty shifted to my mother's work schedule which indeed makes her happy. For the last one year the sparrows have started inviting a pair of mynahs since the time I have added a few more plants. These birds come in turn and also at intervals.<br />
<br />
The sparrows have friends in our locality where they visit everyday to check how the whistling cockatoos are doing inside their cage. <br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Pets have a unique way of building relationships with people. Like dogs are faithful to their masters, cats never forget their house number. We human beings often wonder how can a cat remember the house even after it refuses to become completely domestic. Since I was in school my experience with cats have been quite so fascinating since one of these animals was my constant company for more than five years. Like puppies, kitten too love to play with us but their hidden claws to catch prey are something one should careful about. In Bengali there is a saying that cats are "Bagher mashi", which means they are linked to the tiger family and the the proverb is true in every sense. They quietly proceed towards their prey-- a mouse is their favourite hunt -- and pounce upon it. They don't kill the prey but waits for it to die holding it under it claws like a winner. After that the cat enjoys playing with the prey to check if it has actually a successful hunt. Now he looks happy having finished his operation. I had the opportunity to watch my pet's antics since Panchu, my pet cat, came to me when he was barely a year old. Initially I had named him Pancham. But his nick name became more popular and my parents too adored him. A pet cat can be a neighbour's envy since they enter our door like a guest making their presence clear to everyone by a typical sound which only his owner can identify with. They not only don't meow but also modulate their voice according to their requirements. Our cat used to get scared by any kind of noise but listened to music with his eyes closed when I used to play the music system. He loved fish, milk and bread other than sandesh, a sweetmeat. Unfortunately is no more alive. At the middle of the night it used to come through a window and we never felt trouble since it had become a part and parcel of our life. Since then many years have passed and after almost six years one more cat had joined our family and we had named him Toofan and he had a brother, Baggu. The brothers were fed by my mother and me in turns. Like two human beings, my cats were also very different in nature. One like to sit quietly near the kitchen door while the other stayed out. In course of time, Baggu disappeared but Toofan continued to visit our house for food and love. They are grown-ups now and stay away from home. Once in a while other cats walk over the boundary wall of our flat and pause to take rest. I never miss a chance to feed one of those who suddenly take this way. There is immense happiness in giving some bread and milk to these small little animals.</span></span>Aditihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07046060477858515626noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27435832.post-49021637383544013142014-07-24T23:28:00.001-07:002019-06-18T00:01:20.727-07:00A great man who had stirred entire West Bengal and made a place for himself in the hearts of men and women as a Hero in the era of 1950s and 60s and 70s is no more alive but his memories have not faded since 33 years have passed by since his demise in the year 1980 on 24th July. A versatile actor and a man of great genius was popularly and lovingly known as Uttam Kumar to all and sundry. I have seen him in real on television and he looks so much real that it does not seem that he is acting. He is like our Guru. His movies have kept him alive not only in our thoughts but make us believe that he is still there...Yesterday was his "Mahaproyan Diwas". The entire afternoon was spent searching for a single movie of his on television but much to my dismay there was not one which was aired between 3 pm to 6pm. Finally, the news channels made me very very happy when they aired some very special moments where some great people were remembering the "Mahanayok". Some popular Bengali songs from his 60's movies came on a local channel and finally there was an old movie,"Shapmochan" which was telecast at night and all these made my day. <br />

He meditated not upon God, but upon India. It was as if all the pages of India's history opened up before him. Engrossed in deep meditation, he felt in his heart of hearts that India would rise only through a renewal and restoration of that highest spiritual consciousness which has made of India, throughout its history, the cradle of religions and cultures. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">No nation can survive without the policy of give and take. As India's greatest deficiency was her poverty, India would have to learn from other countries how to remove it, and for this it was urgently necessary to learn Western science and technology. But India would not just take like a beggar; she would also give something as well. India's strength is in her spirituality, so India would make the whole world understand what true religion is. Swami Vivekananda then decided he would spread India's region and culture throughout the whole world.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Meanwhile, news reached India that the world's first Parliament of Religions was going to be held in the United States of America in Chicago. Swamiji's South Indian followers asked him to take part in it. Swamiji thought of about it, but he wanted divine guidance. At last it came. One night while half asleep, he saw <br />Sri Ramakrishna walking into the ocean and saying to him: "Go". Swamiji then wrote for permission to the Holy Mother, Sri Sarada Devi, who is regarded as another manifestation of Sri Ramakrishna. The Holy Mother wrote back giving her blessings.</span></span> <span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Now Swamji felt sure that his mission of going to the West was ordained by God.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">At times he even had the conviction that great things would be accomplished by him through this Parliament of Religions. One day, when Swamiji was with one of his brother desciples, Swami Turiyananda, he said: </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">"Haribhai, I am going to America". </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">On 31 May 1893, Swamiji sailed from Bombay for America on board the ship 'Peninsular'. After changing ships, he reached Vancouver, Canada, on 25 July. From there he went by train and reached Chicago on 30 July 1893. </span></span><br />

<span style="background-color: blue;"> Feeling happy happy</span></h2>
<br />
The expression of any human when he is happy can be superficial and transient at times, the reason being real happiness which is felt within might not show on the face always. A kind of contentment envelopes our being when we break into laughter when someone cracks a joke, enjoys nature while walking alone down the street in the evening or eat a piece of chocolate pastry. A similar kind of fulfillment is felt after reading a good short story after months of separation from books and authors. Simply putting on some slow music of our choice when we are at home brings the body to rest -- which can be termed as a state of mental peace if not complete happiness. At times jamming up with an old friend rekindles memories from the green past. The freshness of thoughts and the current that is exchanged over a conversation injects a new life into the body that tends to decay soon after transformation. But in all these a lot of enjoyment can be drawn from within family which was our root strength during our growing-up years. If we can find time for ourselves from the routine work, we might also find time to make ourselves contented and charge the life battery called heart and infuse some fresh air into our lungs. Playing some music and dancing with it can energize the body and clapping with friends to Rock music at a concert can add jazz to our life. Some kind of happiness is restricted for a few or for adults only like walking into a discotheque where the entire body becomes a music system in a minute with full-on blast of music. All these actions take place when our mind plunges into boredom because it doesn't have anything worthwhile to think or act upon. Any action excites the body because the mind is then not in the active mode. It has taken backseat. When we are engaged in an activity, we sit and think before we execute the plan -- these series of actions create excitement ripples which we often misunderstand with happiness. Once that task is fulfilled, our mind now looks for another source of action! Now it is programmed to search for external satisfactions.<br />
<br />
This chain of activities and successful completion of those create a bubble of pleasure within. Then we exult, smile, laugh and feel triumphant. We often share these feeling with someone whom we call a friend. Happiness, some say, can be derived from sharing -- be it our thoughts or gifts and goodies. It won't be wrong if I say that at times there might be an absence of a person at times when we need to share. At that very moment what we can do is drink a glass of water and start reading something that can soothe our mind for the time being. Interestingly, our mind, like the pilot, takes off from the runway and reaches a higher plane where there is the existence of only feel-good moods and then our thoughts float on cloud nine. That is how we realize the simple truths of life and become more understanding. The result is a better person who knows how to go within oneself rather than searching for happiness outside the body and soul system.<br />
<br />
It's very normal that when we are happy we must also make sure that others understand our feelings and gets a share of that state of happiness. There in lies the importance of showing our feelings and not hiding the same from others. When we are elated or thrilled after receiving an accolade, our face glows and our spirits are lifted. It doesn't stop here, the heart starts pumping blood into every vein and artery in the body. We must make sure the contentment level doesn't reach the high level of excitement so that our heart beats faster than normal. When everything is under control and the body and mind are trained to the reaction of happiness, we feel blessed. That very moment is kept as a treasure into our hard disc brain. Good times at times last for a long period which we cannot fathom unless we are consciously aware. I have noticed that people often talk about the past and how the times were and cherish those good memories while four heads come together at some place.<br />
<br />
It might so happen that the good times might be replaced by waves of dissatisfaction. They might flow from nowhere and leave us thinking what went wrong. The peace-loving mind gets a blow and we might lose control of the steering. Life as great men have seen is like the ocean where waves of happiness and sadness come and go. Difficult it might be to remain alert all the time but there is no best solution but to keep ourselves anchored like a ship with the cargo of inner knowledge. Well-being becomes our friend forever.<br />

When I am free I can enjoy everything. There is an inner happiness when I can do things on my own terms and in my own way. I can think freely and I have the right to speech. But the meaning of freedom completely changes when we live a family life. I call this a disciplined freedom. Take for example, when I am at home neither can I wake up really late in the morning nor can I go out wherever I wish to and at anytime. I have to follow certain rules. But then I am certainly free to watch the TV all by myself which I hardly could when I was in the hostel or for that matter some eight to ten years ago. I am free to control the remote when my parents are not around. They have given me the allowance to watch the television programmes and movies which are a source of fun and entertainment for me. I can surf the internet at times because I have been given the freedom to check my e-mails and read news online. When I listen to the stories of my parents and other elderly people, I get a different picture of freedom. During those days girls were hardly allowed to mix with boys other than those in the family. Watchful eyes followed young girls wherever they went. Men were lucky because they had the privilege to come back late at night. Girls who had brothers could manage at home and get pocket money to watch a movie with other girls in a cinema hall. To watch a theater I guess some had to do a bit of drama at home. </span></span>Aditihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07046060477858515626noreply@blogger.com0
