The rain deficit this year and late monsoon caused real damage to the seasonal crops which need water especially the paddy crop. There was hardly any rain and even if we got some drizzles and showers in and around Kolkata region, that was insufficient for good crops and North and South 24 parganas. As a result there was spiralling price rise of vegetables in the market. This was the scenario during the monsoon months of July and August. There was hardly any rain and they went dry. Quite in contrary, news from outside West Bengal was very sad. Incessant rains caused floods in some states in the early monsoon period causing flash floods in Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh,Himachal, and Rajasthan. Reports of landslides were also recorded. But here in Bengal, real monsoon arrived very late and suddenly there was heavy rain just before Durga Puja and there was predictions of floods too. Villages, remote areas of South Bengal including Midnapore, Bankura, Dinajpur, went under water
