My experience at Trauma Care

(First the Medical Explanation)

Trauma care is the specialized, time-sensitive medical attention given to individuals with severe, potentially life-threatening injuries from accidents, violence, falls, or other incidents. It involves stabilizing the patient, preventing further damage, and promoting recovery through a multi-step process including primary, secondary, and tertiary surveys, along with treatments such as airway management, resuscitation, surgical intervention, and ongoing rehabilitation to address both physical and mental health needs.

What Trauma Care Entails

Immediate Medical Attention: Trauma care focuses on injuries caused by external force, such as road accidents, falls, gunshot wounds, severe burns, and crush injuries.

Specialized Teams and Facilities: It is delivered in specialized units, like trauma centers, by trained professionals, including trauma surgeons and emergency physicians, to manage critical injuries.

I have been a regular visitor in the trauma Care centre in Daffodil, Lake Town, since my mother was patient of ILD or Interstitial Lung Disorder. My mother was admitted in the Trauma Care Unit since her condition was critical. From Daffodil she was shifted to the Chest department in Nilratan Sarkar Hospital where she stayed at a stretch 10 days and then in intervals. Doctor's came and checked her everyday, once in a day or twice. I have stayed with her 24/7 as an attendent for three days since there were a shortage of attendants during Corona period. Only those patients whose condition is serious get beds. I have lived on the bed for three days since both my limbs were broken due to car accident and it was impossible for me to run around or walk up the stairs. I was in a state of shock since I fell on the road twice within a gap of six months near my house. Literally broken, my father, a septuagenarian, used to run around for several tests for my mother as per doctor's advice. Running around aggravated the problem since my right ankle was broken and my right waist was injured soon after during second fall on a rainy morning. Although I didn't get immediate care since mom's illness but I have lived with my mom  in the NRS Special Home for students in Moulali. My bed was taken after three days so I had to leave every evening since we couldn't arrange hotel accommodation. In the Daffodil trauma care, mom wasn't allowed to meet any visitor. Besides there was a strict rule to maintain silence inside the air conditioned roomI was allowed for one hour in the evening. Nurses were on duty 24/7 on shifts. I knew one of them from Shillong who took good care of my mother. Between 2021-22, my mother went to the Emergency Section in NRS when her case was referred. Patients families have to wait outside when the patient lies on stretcher. All the paperwork takes time while mom was put on oxygen supply. It was a tough time for three of us but my relatives were with us, especially those who know me since I was a child. Otherwise my condition would have been worse after several shocks.
